The two-minute measuring method

Use a flexible sewing tape if you have one. Wrap it just below the wrist bone, keep it flat against the skin and note the point where the tape meets. The tape should touch the skin without compressing it.

No sewing tape? Wrap a narrow strip of paper or non-stretch string around the same place, mark the overlap, then measure that length against a ruler. Measure twice; a few millimetres can change how a rigid cuff feels.

Add room for the fit you want

A close fit moves very little and works well for a slim chain. Add roughly 0.5 to 1 cm to the measured wrist. A comfortable everyday fit usually needs 1 to 1.5 cm. For a loose, draped look, add 1.5 to 2 cm.

Those allowances are general guidance, not a replacement for the measurements on a product page. Wide cuffs, thick beads and stacked bracelets occupy more space and can feel tighter than a fine chain at the same listed length.

Match the measurement to the bracelet type

For a closed bangle, wrist circumference is not enough: the bangle must pass over the widest part of the hand. Bring the thumb toward the little finger, measure around the knuckles, and compare that number with the bangle's inside circumference or diameter.

For an open cuff, check both the inside measurement and whether the material is described as adjustable. Do not repeatedly bend a rigid plated cuff; that can weaken the metal or finish. For beaded elastic styles, check the unstretched circumference and bead size.

Before you order

Confirm whether the listing uses total length, wearable length or inside circumference. Check the closure type, material, care notes and return window. If a page does not state the measurement you need, ask before buying instead of guessing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average bracelet size?

There is no single reliable average for every shopper. Measuring the intended wrist is faster and safer than choosing from an average.

How tight should a bracelet be?

A comfortable bracelet should not pinch or leave a deep mark. You should normally be able to slide one finger beneath a close-fitting chain.

How do I measure for a gift?

Measure a bracelet the recipient already wears from end to end, excluding any extender that is not used. For a bangle, measure its inside diameter.
